I bet you didn't know Thabo Mbeki was a blogger. Yup. Thabo used to write for the ANC wesbite and his posts were intriguingly titled "Letter from the President".  Let's assume for the sake of this post, that it was in fact Thabo writing the blog (the style definitely seems to reflect his personality...or lack thereof). 

Thabo was a good blogger - in terms regularity, not content. He blogged from everything from the Bokke going to the World Cup ("... the united national team that must, on 20 October, bring the Ellis Webb Cup home. Go Bokke, go!") to quoting the works of Percy Bysshe Shelly in a discourse on the "problems" of South Africa being new. 

My only problem is: who the hell was he writing for? Surely not for his constituency - those who find their homes washed away in the rains or razed by fires every year? What do they know of Shelly? And how many of them speak French? How many own computers...with access to the web? Nonetheless, his writing is a window into the thinking of the man and from where I'm standing, it's a disturbing view. The man is clearly the embodiment of the party line and riddled with denial even in the face of facts, defending his insane decisions. Even his support of the Boks seems forced and unnatural...embarrased even. Truly, a lesson in how not to blog.

And now Jacob Zuma has taken over the "blog". 

I can hardly wait.

We don't exactly know what is going to come out the European Parliament concerning blogging and the rights of individuals seeking to put their personal thoughts on the internet for communication with other likeminded (or not) individuals.

One thing is for sure; with the impact of a few large-fanbase blogs, politicians are starting to worry.

We have even heard of Euro-politicians accused of being under investigation by OLAF, the European Anti-Fraud Office, in blogs without a shred of evidence. Things like this lead to law suits....

We have seen bloggers leaking information from the companies they work for. And of course that leads to dismissal.

Many bloggers have to realise that we/they are not above the law. Bloggers have the right to remain anonymous in so long as they don't break the law. Yes the internet is quite unregulated, but blogs are now being treated like any other medium; as public forae.

So, like in any other public forum, you cannot make allegations without at least having some evidence. If you do make allegations of scandal and corruption, at least be smart about it. As the law is observed its not a problem… Just like you cant go out on the street screaming very very bad words at someone, you shouldn’t be able to do so on the internet. Bloggers can be a little careful. Not that they shouldn’t make allegations they believe are true- but they should probably use journalistic phrases like “it is believed that”, or “some citizens think that”, or, “though there is no tangible evidence, it is a possibility that…”

And the thing is, if it is done within the scope of the law- it hurts them even more!

Greetings Earthlings, siblings and fellow apOstoLic AlieNs

This is my second attempt at maintaining a web log. My first was in 2007. That web log (from now on referred to as a blog - oh yes sir, I AM indeed showing off, wanting to prove that a so-called coloured laaitie knows where the word "blog" comes from) was cremated after 2 posts. It was saved, so thankfully it went to heaven, Praise GOD! Please feel free to view the ashes, again and again! You may even find some "hope".

Seriously, I just didn't have the time to blog. In fact I still don't, but yesterday my dear friend Martyn Kilian (who most probably heard about wordpress.com from me in any event!!!) told me that God told him to tell me that I must blog. Now who am I to resist the very oracles of God? (Hey, there's a future topic for discussion: "weighing prophecy" - but more of that later). Anyway! I think I might just have something to say. And it would be good to engage ancient, current and future thought in this Global Village called Earth.

So, thanks Martyn. Here's my second attempt.

EU starts process to regulate blogs

I covered Dan Hannan's post on 4th. September warning that the interfering EU was about to regulate and censor blogging within it's borders, well the official moves are now getting under way.

Mrs Mikko has proposed that bloggers should be required to identify themselves and that some popular blogs should come with a declaration of interests.

"We do not need to know the exact identity of bloggers. We need some credentials, a quality mark, a certain disclosure of who is writing and why. We need this to be able to trust and rely on the source."

Watch out Obnoxio, Old Holborn, and Mr. Monkey.

I suggest we all get ready to deluge EU parliamentary candidates with emails, letters, and blog posts, to bring these dictatorial, Stalinist, faceless, bureaucratic, control freaks back into the land of common sense!

I suppose certain South Tyneside councillors will be supporting the EU in their moves to introduce censorship and control then.
